Education Philosophy
At the Gilberg Family Religious School (GFRS), we believe that Jewish education is a lifelong journey rooted in tradition, community, and joyful discovery. Founded in the spirit of our temple’s original mission -- ensuring every child learns Torah -- we are proud to be Northeast Los Angeles’ premiere K–8 Jewish learning program.
Our philosophy is shaped by three core values:
1. Torah for Every Child
We are committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive, and affordable Jewish education to all families, regardless of background or means. Inspired by our founders—six women who dreamed of a Jewish future for their children -- we uphold the principle that no child should be turned away from learning.
2. Learning Through Experience and Community
Jewish learning comes alive when it is hands-on, creative, and shared. Our curriculum blends Hebrew language, Torah stories, Jewish history, holidays, music, and art to help students build knowledge and identity. Community is central: parents join in throughout the year for celebrations and workshops that connect home and school.
3. Teaching the Whole Family
We believe the best learning happens when families grow together. Our curriculum deepens the bond between Jewish tradition and home life through inter-generational workshops where parents and children learn side by side—building sukkot, making art, and more.
At GFRS, students don’t just learn about Judaism—they live it. They come to see themselves as part of a proud, enduring story, one that began 100 years ago here in Highland Park and will carry forward for generations to come.
