CELEBRATE TORAH WITH LEARNING AND CHEESECAKE!
Come observe Shavuot, the holiday that celebrates our receiving the Torah at Sinai, with TBI!

Tuesday, May 14 at 7pm

We will have a brief service in the sanctuary and then move into the community room for a delicious dairy meal spiced with Jewish learning.

Rabbinic Intern Robin Podolsky will share a teaching and lead a guided meditation. Professional storyteller ‘Eli Rarey will take us on a journey into the Book of Ruth (the first Jew by choice). TBI President Bill Fishman will explore the meaning of Jewish prayer; and TBI member, Bernard Rohrbacher will share about his experiences with Daf Yomi (daily Talmud study) this year and present a Talmudic teaching.

All are welcome!

Erev Shabbat Healing Service

Erev Shabbat Healing Service – Friday, April 19, 2013 7:30 PM

Join TBI members and the wider community in a ground breaking Friday evening Healing Service at TBI on April 19 at 7:30 PM. Sponsored by our newly formed Chevra Refu’ah ( healing group ), this service will offer those in need of healing and those supporting them an hour of prayer, reflection, meditation, readings and chant designed to evoke the loving spirit of the Shechinah into our hearts and souls. Rabbinic Intern Robin Podolsky, Susan Stone, Mark Strunin and others will provide spiritual guidance and support.

Open to all, please bring a yahrzeit candle in a glass holder and a light dessert for eight people – if you can.

Information about training to become a member of TBI’s Chevra Refu’ah will be presented that evening. More information? Email Mark Strunin at strumark@earthlink.net

Shabbat Local Housing Request.From time to time TBI has guests from out of the area who would like to attend services but do not drive on Shabbat. If you live within walking distance of TBI and are willing to host, please let us know. In the immediate future, Susan Stone is looking to find a host family or two for some friends who would like to attend her son’s Bar Mitzvah on April 27th. Saturday Shabbat Services Meeting every week for over 80 years Traditional Saturday Minyan with Cantor Ken RothsteinJoin us every Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for our Saturday minyan. Cantor Ken Rothstein leads a service that is meditative, informal, traditional, and amusing all at the same time. Join in the kibbitzing before, during, and after the service, followed by an extremely good dairy potluck lunch with more kibbitzing, shmoozing, and noshing.

TWO MORE WEEKS TO FIND OUT What Does Judaism Say About…?

Due to illness and the intervening holiday week, Rabbinic Intern Robin Podolsky’s class will continue to meet for two more weeks, on April 3 and April 10 from 7:30 until 9:00 pm at TBI. New students who have not paid for the series are welcome to attend at $15 per session.

Stump the Student Rabbi! Class participants will shape the class to suit their own needs. Each week, you will be welcome to bring questions for the week to come–from family issues, to business ethics, to how to host one’s from relatives, to getting the most from our holidays. What does Judaism teach about the daily questions we grapple with in real life? Rabbinic Robin will consolidate the questions, do the research, consulting centuries of Jewish wisdom, and plan 3 half hour lessons on topics you select.

All you need to bring is your curiosity and participation! (and something to write with if you wish). Learning materials will be provided.

Please bring something to share. All are welcome.Cantor Leon is a 4th year Rabbinic student at AJR with a Masters in Jewish Education from American Jewish University. She has been the Cantor and Bar Mitzvah Program Director at Temple Beth Hillel in Valley Village since 2008. She has also taught Adult Education at Temple Beth Hillel, served as a lecturer & advisor to students at American Jewish University and has worked in development for the Women’s Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. Cantor Leon is applying for the dual position of Rabbi-Education Director.

Friday, April 12, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. Family Friday Shabbat Service – Family Friendly Event Rabbi Susan Goldberg will lead us in prayer, song and devotion. Please come at 6:00 p.m. if you want to join the family band. Bring your instrument and join us!Please bring tasty meatless, shellfish-less, dairy dishes to our post-service Shabbat feast. TBI Rabbinic Intern Robin Podolsky – Saturday Shabbat services on Saturday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. Robin Podolsky will be ordained by the Academy of Jewish Religion in June 2013. Before joining TBI as our intern, she interned at Bend the Arc (previously the Progressive Jewish Alliance). Robin has also been a lecturer and teacher at Leo Baeck Temple, Hebrew Union College and USC, and is a widely published journalist. Additionally, she spent 8 years as the Press Secretary for a former state Senator. Robin is applying to the position of Rabbi.

The TBI community will donate a portion of what we make to the Union Station Homeless Shelter in keeping with the mitzvah of sharing with those less fortunate. Bring dough or a favorite recipe and ingredients to the Temple — we’ll bake it up in TBI’s amazing kitchen. Light food and heavy shmoozing provided. Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.Last Saturday of the Month – Musical Shabbat with Rabbi Susan GoldbergJoin us in celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of Luca Herman and Phillip Rundblad.Join us for a musical Shabbat morning service in which Luca and Phillip will be called to the Torah. They will chant from the Torah and share a perspective on the Torah portion. After the service we will celebrate with a kiddush hosted by the two families. All are warmly welcomed to attend!
