Temple Beth Israel of Highland Park and Eagle Rock
Welcome to Temple Beth Israel

Temple Beth Israel is a small, friendly, inclusive, egalitarian independent neighborhood synagogue, located in the historic neighborhood of Highland Park in Northeast Los Angeles.

Ed Leibowitz wrote an amazing article about us called “Finding Sanctuary” in the September, 2008 Los Angeles Magazine. Great writing by someone who knows the temple from the inside. Beautiful pictures. (Opens in a separate window.)

And there was the article in the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles. Thanks to journalist Jane Ulman. (Opens in a separate window.)

We're a small, friendly congregation.

  • We have heartfelt Shabbat services every Saturday morning and Friday services on the first and second Friday nights of the month.
  • We celebrate the cycle of the Jewish year with holiday festivities.
  • We have a full education program for children and adults.
  • We have been at our present location since 1930. We're one of the oldest congregations in Los Angeles to stay in our original home.
  • We are close to downtown Los Angeles, accessible by light rail and bus.
  • We are local to Eagle Rock, Mt. Washington, Highland Park, South Pasadena, and surrounding communities.
  • Member of the Jewish Federation of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys
  • Everyone takes part. Women participate fully in all activities. Children are welcome. So are single people and everyone else, from out-of-town guests to curious visitors. Interfaith families are specifically invited. We have regulars who are gay. Our kiddush potlucks are the best in town. Come check us out.
